Q: How is the handling and steering feedback in a C6 Corvette?
I’m thinking about buying a C6 Corvette coupe and I’m concerned with things other than speed as well (I know it’s amazing in that department). I’m wondering how the steering feels, how the shifting (manual of course) feels, and how the car moves during tight turns. Other cars I’m considering are the BMW Z4 and the Audi TT so a comparison to them, or something like them, would be awesome.
A: Horizontal G isn’t everything, as the guy above would make it seem. Also, the rating can vary based on driver and tires and weather, so it’s not a huuuugely accurate comparison.
The C6 corvette handles pretty damn well for a car with a live axle and leaf springs. I’m pretty impressed with it, especially the Z06, although I firmly believe that’s more of a track car than a road car, because of how uncomfortable and noisy it is for a a DD.
Q: Why does my 76 Corvette give off smoke in the engine compartment?
I have a 76 Corvette. I am trying to figure out this issue and maybe someone can help. When I start the car it runs with choke on. Just before the carb opens the motor starts give off light smoke. It seems to be coming from between the exhaust manifold and the engine. The smoke is not heavy nor does it look super white light coolant burning. The smoke usually starts form after running for a minute or two. Any ideas what it could be?
A: 350,396,400,427,454.They all have a tendency to loose oil from valve cover gaskets even after they are put on new.gently tighten all of the bolts on the valve cover starting from the inside then working your way out.Sounds like you have a small oil leak from the gasket.
Q: How do I get my Corvette lights to go down?
I have a 1979 C3 corvette and the lights will not go down. I can’t start the car either because I wrapped the engine in plastic so it wouldn’t get dirty from the paint stripper. Is there any way to make those lights pop down without having to start the car, and even when I did start the car they would stay up. Anyone know what to do?
A: the lights are open because of they are held closed by vacuum. if the vacuum is lost they will stay open. look for a hose off. this will make the car run rough also.
Q: How can I put subwolfers in a 1973 Corvette?
I currently own a 1973 Corvette, and I am planning on fixing it up over the summer. My problem is that I would like to put subwolfers in it, but I have no trunk, and no back seat. If you have seen a car like this then you know that there IS a little space behind the seats… but that is where the battery is. So is there really a way to put subs in a 1973 Corvette?
Please help!
[I would like ALOT of bass. Some where around the power of 2 12's maybe if possable.]
[The most possable]
A: I recently worked on a 1976. The only way that I found that we could fit anything that would produce bass was a 6 inch Bazooka tube (with the built in 200 watt amp), or a small jvc 6 inch under seat powered sub. I would personally go with the Bazooka tube if you wanted a sub.
Q: How to open a 1985 corvette hood when the cable is not working.?
My dad has a 1985 corvette. We are trying to get into the hood to charge the battery but cant open the hood because we believe the cable is either broken or not working. Is there any alternative ways to open the hood?
A: There is a couple of things you can try.
Look for the cable end near the latch inside the car and try to pull it with a good set of vice-grips. The only other way is to try to get up under the hood from under the car and manually work the release mechanism your self.
Q: Is there any major differences between a 1990 and a 1989 corvette? How much more will a convertible appreciate
Ok corvette people please help me out on this one, thanks.
A: There is no major differences in the two. ‘88 was the last year of the 4+3 transmission and the LT1 didn’t come out until ‘92. The convertible will probably hold it’s value better than the coupe, but I doubt that either will appreciate. The ‘84-’91 models are not really considered that collectible, with the exception of the ZR-1.
Q: What are the payments on a dodge viper or a z06 corvette and can they be daily drivers?
If i get paid $1700 biweekly is this enough i will be 21 so the cost of high insurance has to be factored in. If it isn’t a prudent decision what about a normal corvette not z06?
A: it all depends on the price of the car, how much you put for your downpayment, for how long you finance that car, and your credit score, normale for every $5,000.00 your payment will be like $120.00
for example
$5,000.00 payment will be $120.00
$10,000.00 pymt $240.00
$15,000.00 pymt $360.00 and so on
Q: What year produced the best looking corvette stingray?
I’m interested in buying a Corvette Stingray but I’m unsure which year is the best in terms of design and style. Some have told me that it’s the 1981. Others have said 1978 which was their anniversary year. Any help offered would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
A: 1972
Q: How much would insuring a 2002 corvette cost for 27 year old male?
I’m wondering about how much would insurace cost for a male 27 years of age, no speeding tickets no accidents. The car would be a 2002 Corvette z06 , costing about 25000 on ebay.
Any help?
A: Help yourself – you can check your quotes in internet, for example here – carinsurance.yoll.net
Q: How much would a early 2000 Corvette cost me a month in payments if I financed the car?
My dream car is a Corvette. However, I want to get one really bad, I know they are expensive. Give me an estimate on how much a month.
A: depends on 3 things
1. your credit rating
2. the cost of the car
3. how well you can bargain
Q: How hard is it to replace a pilot bearing on a 1985 corvette?
Hi,
I’m looking to purchase a corvette but the dealer says that the car needs the pilot bearing to be replaced. How hard is this, and how much do you think it would cost to do it myself/ have a mechanic do it?
A: Not real sure on cost, but you have to remove the transmission to access the pilot bearing. Its not too hard, but the really the best job for a beginner. Check with some friends with more experience and see if they would help.
Q: How does a chevy corvette coupe compare against a lotus elise?
I’ve read reviews on both cars.
Lotus is lighter has a 145 bhp toyota engine(i maybe wrong)
Chevy corvette coupe is 430 bhp engine(but more heavier).
Their prices are almost similar.
If there is a race between these 2 who will most likely win.
I guess on a straight track Corvette, on a winding track Lotus elise(maybe)
A: i would think the lotus would win on a tight track, but not by a huge margin, the vette would kill it on a faster track.
but on the road, the lotus is small cramped, rides extremly rough, has no cargo space, radio sucks, i doubt it has a/c etc….
while the vette would make a pretty decent everyday car, good radio, comfortable, good a/c, power everything etc….
if you plan on just racing it and driving it now and then on weekends, go for the lotus, if you plan on using it frequently on the road, get the vette.
also, the vette can be upgraded easily, while the lotus cannot generally be modified
Q: C3 1976 Corvette How to Do a Conversion from a Auto Transmission to a Manual Trans?
I have a 1976 Corvette Stingray – and it has a Auto Transmission and I Want to know if you can and if there is a website out there that explains how to do a conversion to switch from a Auto to a Manual Trans.. Either making it a 4-speed or I would rather make it a 5-speed though… Right now it has a 350 engine and a 400 turbo Trans in it..
James,
A: That is not an impossible job , but it is a dumb thing to do . Get the auto rebuilt and keep the integrity of the car . If you just need a 4 speed Vette , get money together and buy one . Why not fix your car up back original so it will be worth more and sell it to raise money for another ? By the way , I know someone with a sweet 68 Vette – 427 tri-power – matching numbers . It is for sale .
Q: Can a Corvette made of fiberglass be repainted without stripping the original paint, and if not, why not?
I recently received a quote from a classic car restorer, who told me he would simply block sand the car and repaint it. I always heard to properly repaint a Corvette, the original paint had to be either chemically stripped, or media blasted, to ensure the new paint would adhere to the fiberglass.
A: there is some truth behind the strip theory. you see, if it’s an old Vette, it has lacquer paint on it. lacquer is a paint that never really cures and needs to “breath”. if you put a modern urethane paint on top of it, it seals in the lacquer and it can’t breathe and the result can be delamination or spider webbing. a good example of this is if you ever look at an old Trans Am with original paint and decals there will always be spider webbing under the decals since it has sealed off the paint. another example (for you guys who’ve been in the paint bus for a while) is, have you ever noticed that when working on an old car that you can strip the paint off easily with a razor blade when there is the old red oxide primer underneath it? same reason. if the lacquer can’t breath acrylics and urethanes can’t bond to it. anyway, i never reccomend chemical stripping fiberglass. chemicals tend to soak into the glass and can cause problems later. media blasting is the best choice. it will strip all the paint without harming the fiberglass, giving you a good clean surface to work with.
Q: What is the value of a 76 corvette, no motor, that needs a paint job?
When my husband passed away he left behind a 76 Corvette Stingray, he planned on restoring it but unfortunately didn’t get far. It has no motor, needs new paint, tires, and interior needs redone. Now I am wanting to get rid of it but have no idea what it might be worth, if anything. I thought it might make a good project for someone and I just hate seeing it just sitting there collecting dust. Any suggestions?
A: Was your husband a member of the local Corvette Club or any other enthusiast group…. if so that would be a good place to call and ask for help. Often people who comtemplate major restoration work like you suggest have a “friend” somewhere who shared their enthusiasm and will no doubt give you some help with this problem.
regards,
Texian13 who used to drive a 72 Corvette in Hill Climbs and do Rallys around Austin …. before i got too old
