Q: How do I install an Add-a-Circuit to my 1997 Ford F-150. I need a new 12v ignition circuit.?
I need to add a new 12v ignition line for stereo/gps unit. However, I don’t know where to tap into/ how to install an new circuit. My truck is a 1997 F-150 5.4L.

I have spent the last few days trying to figure out what is wrong with my car stereo, and have narrowed the problem down to a faulty 12v ignition wire. Instead of repairing it, I figure it is easier (and cheaper) to run a new line from an Add-a-Circuit kit. Thanks! (And all fuses are tested OK, so I don’t know what the problem with the original line is.)

A: Since a stereo can draw a fair amount of amps you do need a new circuit from the ignition switch – and you wire it to the same spot on the switch as the original line. A circuit diagram would be helpful but if you don’t have one just look for the old wire connection or use a meter to check the terminals with the switch off ( no power ) and in accessory ( power ).

Q: Why do I have trouble starting my 2003 Ford F-150?
I have a Ford F-150 that every other day I have a hard time starting. We have already replaced the fuel filter and the air filter. I have even tried a octane boost. None of these have really helped. I hope someone can help me.

A: The next time it won’t start on the first few cranks, open the hood and spray some starting fluid into the air intake. Then crank the engine again and if it starts right up you’ll know you have a fuel problem rather than a spark problem. If it’s a fuel problem, check your Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor which tells the computer your coolant is cold on a cold start and to richen the fuel mixture. Also check the fuel filter and fuel pump pressure using the gauge below. You can use the spark tester below even on a Coil Over Plug (COP) ignition system. Try turning the ignition key to on (not start) for 5 seconds and off for 5 seconds three times in a row before actually turning the key to start. That primes the fuel pump pressure by turning the fuel pump on. Your fuel pressure could be leaking down too fast. The pressure gauge below will tell you that.

A: Call a local auto wrecking yard or recycler – check the yellow pages. Some specialize in trucks. It will be necessary to tell them what exact year, make and model of truck you have. Good luck.

I can’t find one specifically designed this truck. Most manufacturers that I find specify NOT for f-150 super crew.

How much would it cost to get an 14″ lift kit on a ford f-150?

A: A 14 inch lift is too much for an F-150. If you have a 84ish-96 model, the TTB Dana 44 will only tolerate about 6 inches of lift and 35 inch tires. With a 14 inch lift I’m guessing you’re going to be running 42’s or 44’s. The rear 8.8 inch axle won’t handle tires that large either. If you have a 97-up model a 14 inch lift kit isn’t even on the market, and would be incredibly expensive and complicated due to the nature of the front suspension on the newer trucks.

So basically you’re going to need a F-350 with the Dana 60 front and the Sterling 10.25 inch rear, and even then you’re right at the limit of what they can handle. You may want to look into Unimog axles or a Dana 70 swap. As you might imagine this will not be cheap. To do it right you’ll be spending around $10k + whatever the truck costs.

A: A 2001 Ford should be almost all metric, you will find a few SAE (standard) sizes where they’ve kept older components.

For the brakes, get a metric socket set and a metric combination wrench set.

To be sure, turn the wheels all the way to the left or right, and look at the bolt on the back of the caliper.

Q: Have problems with 1996 F- 150 Ford, Hard to start and when it does start it is weak and some what high idle?
Also a cloud of smoke shoots out the muffler upon firing.

A: Your O2 may have gone bad you should try cleaning it or replacing it and you may want to check the vacuum lines

I still have the original AM radio in my 1979 Ford F-150.

On some radio stations I get a small amount of feedback static when I turn up the volume. This is only on the lower power radio stations which don’t carry a clear signal.

On the strong signal stations, I can turn up the volume just fine without any feedback static.

A: Feedback and static are two different things. I’m not sure I get what effect you’re describing.

I find these days, AM radio broadcast doesn’t invest much in the sound quality- especially when the program is mostly discussion and commentary. Check your antenna to make sure its well grounded. Check the noisy station with a different radio- perhaps one in the house or a pocket radio, to verify the noise comes from either the radio, or the folks transmiting a noisy signal. Every radio can’t be defective.
